About J. Keith Collins

Personalized Service. Effective Representation. Excellent Results.

Criminal charges can be some of the greatest challenges people experience in their lifetimes. At my Boulder law firm, Collins, Rafik and Jacobson, LLC, I am dedicated to helping my clients overcome the difficulties they face and move forward with their lives. My dedication to clients begins with my commitment to personalized service, effective representation and excellent results.

I tailor the representation I provide to my clients' unique needs. This often means considering all of the circumstances, not just the current charges. I partner with clients' families to make sure that the course of action we pursue will be effective in the future, as well as today. When issues such as addiction or mental health problems are factors in a case, I work with my clients to create a strategy that takes these factors into account and helps increase the likelihood of success.

After all, the judge only knows what the police wrote down in the police reports — their statements about what was likely the worst day of your life. I help fill in the rest of the information so the judge sees the complete picture. When judges understand all of the circumstances, they are more likely to listen.

I begin my work by taking a proactive and thorough review of all evidence in the case. I seek out witnesses, examine all documentation related to the case and the charges, and locate physical evidence. Often, I bring in experts to help tell my clients' side of the story.

I then use the information I collect to build a strong and effective defense. My work can involve filing motions, negotiating with prosecutors and preparing extensively for trial. Experience helps me determine the best course of action based on the facts of your case.

Communication Sets My Practice Apart

At each step of the way, I emphasize communication. This means that my clients know the charges they face, the possible courses of action, and the likelihood of various outcomes. Knowing these things empowers them to be active participants in the decision-making process. They do not have to follow their defense attorney's advice "because he said so." Instead, they receive guidance they truly understand about matters that affect them.

My Background And Experience

I attended the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law, and represented clients at the Student Law Office. While still attending law school, I was offered a coveted internship at the Boulder County District Attorney's Office, and was later hired as a deputy district attorney. While at the DA's office, I gained valuable trial experience handling a variety of cases including felonies, misdemeanors and juvenile delinquencies. I have since spent more than a decade as a criminal defense lawyer. I use extensive experience to help clients achieve favorable outcomes in their cases.
